  • carrot thinning

I have planted carrots in a big container and seem to have rather a lot of them. I think I need to thin them out but not sure how many to leave in would welcome any advice.

How big a container (width and depth), and how close together are your carrots at the moment?

Depends how big you want your carrots. Imagine the size of them and then thin out accordingly. I tend not to thin out too much. The carrots push themselves apart and I harvest baby ones, leaving others to grow to full size. Job Done.

I have attached some photos these are after I have just removed about 50% of the shoots from the container!

I am with FF on this one I never thin to throw away always to eat.

A friend forgot about his pot of carrots and come harvest they were shoulder to shoulder and packed so tight we had to prise the first lot out with a trowel.

Thanks for the advice - I will leave them as they are now until the carrots start to grow and then pick some baby ones and leave the rest as suggested - I had to remove some they were so tightly packed together

i take small ones to eat, leaving 1ins between each plant, and then they seem to grow to a very usable and reasonable size..

It's a bit of a faff but I sow each carrot seed individually about 1 inch apart in the containers, starting round the edges and working inwards. Most of them seem to germinate and, like others, I take the first lot as baby carrots, leaving the rest to mature.

Take baby ones and leave the rest to get bigger always works for me too.
