Hi Mark - I just have one raised bed for carrots and I scatter the seed with gay abandon The carrots usually grow quite happily and as I pull the very young ones for baby veg, it allows more room for the remaining ones to grow bigger. I suppose the spacing if you're growing in regimented rows depends on, as you've said, getting a hoe between the rows and how big you want your carrots! Obviously I just hand weed.

My carrots are in a tub this year. Seeds scattered willy nilly over one half then a few weeks after the same with the 2nd half. I will thin them as they grow and eat the thinnings. Yum
When weeding, the best way to make sure you are removing a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull on it.
If it comes out of the ground easily, it is a valuable plant.

Hmmph at willy nilly . Seriously though, carrots will grow well enough if there is at least an inch between plants so broadcasting the seed works. I have until now, because I have had plenty of ground to grow in, spaced my rows at 18" apart. That not only lets me hoe but also allows space to rake out the decapitated weeds. It is also plenty of space to allow me to get down and hand weed. Bottom line is anything over an inch

I do rows 6" apart and hand weed between. Don't get on with hoeing and going for bigger spacing seems a waste of valuable growing space.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Hi. I use the square foot gardening method in my raised beds and sow 16 carrots in a 30cm square... I sow a pinch of seeds in to each of 16 holes and when the seedlings come through I thin to one seedling per station. This method has worked really well and I have had decent sized carrots.
