    Carrot have you tried ' Sugarsnax'?

    I am on my 4th year of growing carrot's and i have not yet found the verity that tastes as good as i want. I have tried the early Nantes carrots, and chantenay red cored , plus the purple haze ones and while they are far Superior to tasteless cheap supermarket carrots i have not found a favourite yet that really has that lovely carrot taste that is sweet as well as carrot tasting! This year after much reading of catalogues i am going for the 'sugarsnax' verity from Kings. Have any of you guys tried this one yet ? Is it as good as it sounds?, Can anyone recommend any other verities that tastes like a proper carrot with that carrot sweetness an proper carrot taste.

    Not yet tried but its in the seedbox for this year!

    They do sound like a nice salad or snack box variety. Presumably quite sweet - so appealing to get kids on their 5 a day.

        I grew it last year, I wasn't impressed.

        The best, sweetest carrot I've ever grown is Adelaide (in pots and in the ground, it was sweeter than my others: Purple Haze, Chantenay, Sugarsnax et al)

          I don't think the carrot taste experience has too much to do with the type of carrot, but more to do with when it was dug up?

          In my view carrots need to be eaten within hours of being harvested as the flavour deteriorates by the minute.

          Thats why your supermarket carrots are tasteless and even the ones that are sold with limp greenery still on can't compete with freshly pulled home grown carrots............whatever the variety!

          btw, I have grown sugarsnax and didn't personally find them much different!

            We like Sugarsnax, we grow them in pots for an early crop and they're lovely. We grew Chantenay, Early Nantes and Sugarsnax last year, and the Sugarsnax came out tops, followed by Chantenay. In the ground we grew Yellowstone, Purple Haze, Ingot and Healthmaster, along with a couple of HSL varieties. Favourite out of those was Purple Haze.

              I grew creme de lite carrots last year and found them very sweet but not very carroty, i still enjoyed them, so i'm gonna grow them again this year. They are excellent as raw salad carrots though.

                Thank you all for your carrot critiques
                I think you might very well be right Snadger about the sweetness and flavour levels droping away fast as soon as they are pulled from most verities anyway. I will give these sugarsnax a try out this year then, and i think i will grab a pack of Adelaide too T-s, it's nice to have a couple of verities on the go eh! . I never liked carrots very much until i started growing my own , it makes you realize what your missing out on.

                  i grew sugarsnax successfully last year in a container, i found them sweet, especially when eaten raw. i was impressed with them so im growing them again this year.

                    when i were visiting in Yorkshire a seasoned Yorkshire lady showed me how to roast carrots to bring out the best in them. They were the best an sweetest carrots i ever tasted so i will post the recipe up in our 'season to taste' forum.

                      I am trying 'Sweet Baby Jane. They are supposed to be edible from growing in 7 weeks. With a short growing timespan i'm hoping for more sweetness.

                        I haven't tried Sugarsnax but I had some James Scarlett and they were sweet and crunchy-ideal for eating raw
