  • Can you i.d. this seedling please?

I sowed some red cabbage in modules, and they have all come up looking exactly as expected, except for one. See attached pics. It has the look and texture of lettuce about it, but maybe a bit thicker leaves. It doesn't look like anything else I am growing, so it's not a seed from another packet that I might have mixed up. It was definitely out of the red cabbage seed packet.

What do you think it might be?

Could be a turnip. And they're brassicas too, so easy to muddle up the seeds

Could be lettuce, these are my (suffering slightly from sunstroke) iceberg lettuce. They are glad that you asked the question - I have moved them into the shade now

I agree it looks lettucy -esp. the shape and colour, but it's not like any lettuces I am growing. Also, the leaves are thicker than salad leaves. The seed must have been in the same packet as the red cabbage seeds.

Oh well, I'll let it grow on and see what happens!

i think it looks like a californian poppy, only because I have pulled up about 2000 of the things from the allotment today and it looks suspiciously similar.

Well that's even stranger as I haven't got any of those, and whereas I could understand another brassica seedling getting into the red cabbage packet, a flower seed would be harder to understand!

Just remembered, though, all the seeds looked identical, so whatever it is, it's seed looked like a cabbage seed and nothing like a lettuce seed.

What does a californian poppy seed look like?

I could try feeding a bit to the local slugs and snails, but I'll probably find that they won't eat it, and I am actually lavishing tlc on a common weed!

I think it's a turnip too, looks very like the leaves on mine. A bit glossier than cabbage leaves, and more frilly.

Eat a leaf. It won't kill you - lettuce will be nice, turnip won't.
