I've got a savoy cabbage that shows no sign of heading up, and it's sprawling over my path - can i just cut it and eat it like spring greens, or will it be tough and bitter?

My view would be if it hasn't bolted it should be OK to eat (just less productive for the space). If it's bolting then it could be tough and bitter.
There is only one sure way to find out....

I would be inclined to take a piece of leaf and eat it raw, that should tell you whether or not it will be OK when cooked.
Mind you, I can't walk past a vegetable that I have grown without tasting it raw - no surprise that I still haven't managed to get any peas into the kitchen yet

I got the same thing with mine,just pick the leaves,if they like mine they will not be large leafed,after picking out the top mine have sprouted from the leaf joints,just like broccoli does,and they to are tasty,sigpicAnother nutter ,wife,mother, nan and nanan,love my growing places,seed collection and sharing,also one of these

So I had half of these savoy leaves with my dinner last night, and they were great! The leaves were huge, about 18" across, and I cut out most of the spine out prior to prepping. So glad they didn't go to waste!He-Pep!Comment
