Can i grow runners and squash in one container?

    Can i grow runners and squash in one container?

    Hi all, i'm trying to think of ways to save space on my tiny plot, and was wondering if i can plant runner beans round the edges of a large barrel with a wigwam on top, then plant a squash in the middle to trail out and down? I could strip the leaves at the bottom of the runners to allow in light?
    If i try this, i'll be adding a lot of manure to the barrel for the squash - will the beans tolerate this?

    As long as you make sure it gets enough water etc then it shouldn't be a problem. Beans + Squash are 2/3 of the "Three Sisters" growing method (the other being sweetcorn).

      Id say its a good idea. Both like really rich moist soil so providing you have that covered then go for it.

        Sounds promising, thanks! Is there any point growing two squash plants together, or will one thrive better?

          You may need to water a couple times of day if we get any hot sunny days...you could always plant your squash on the compost heap

            Two would be a squash!

              I might try a courgette on my compost heap, but it doesn't get much sun....
