Default Cabbages

I`m growing cabbages for the first time and they are ready to plant out the weekend, is there any thing special i should do. Also anything special to protect them from insects and slugs.

I brought a veg cage this year to cover my brocolli, and the cabbage butterflies laid there eggs on them, but i learnt my lesson there so i`m putting my cabbages under the veg cage as well to protect them from the butterflies.

Thanks for your help.

As for planting them out, make sure the soil your planting them into is firm and I mean well troden down, or they won't produce a firm heart.
Slug protection is collars (organic, hit and miss) or slug pellets (non-organic works every time)
Stake a net over them to protect from birds.
Insect attack can be stopped with water with a bit of washing up liqiid in and sprayed on(organic, hit and miss) or one of the multitude if insecticides (non-organic, works every time)
Take your pick. I don't do organic, life is too short and I want to eat most of what I put in.
Tin hat on, prepare for incoming
