I have noticed brown spots on my Solent Wight garlic cloves. They are great in every way but the cloves have these brown blemishes which annoys me. Can anyone enlighten me as to what it could be and what the cause is and if it can be avoided.

Is this on the garlic you have harvested or the garlic you are planting?
Not that I know the answer either way, but...
(I was sorting out my cloves for planting today - didn't get around to it as I intended as Life intervened - but noticed some brown blemishes on some of the cloves - hope they are OK to plant like that?)Warning: I have a dangerous tendency to act like I know what I'm talking about.

They were on the garlic I had harvested. As I said they are fine to cook with so I guess it is okay to plant yours. Just curious to know if there is an explanation for this.Comment

Sometimes brown marks on carrots and parsnips can be caused by clay deposits in the soil?
Could be the same for garlic?Just a thought!
