My courgette plants have been getting far too big for the windowsill, so I've planted two out to see how they go. They're pretty big - about a foot - but I've managed to break a few of the stalks on one of them through extreme clumsiness. Is it likely to recover?

Mine were about 8 inches tall with three leaves on and a fourth appearing. I put mine in the ground on sunday because of the lack of space and since then a stalk from 4 of my plants have snapped. So far so good, they are still growing with gusto as the fourth leaf on one is much bigger. I continue to hope mine grow as its my first time. Good luck with yours. -
Depends on where they are broken. Where have they broken?

I think the main stem is ok, so hopefully it will survive. The stalks are broken about halfway up to the leaves, but, erm, all of the stalks are broken.Comment

The gusty old winds down here have broken some of my courgette leaf stems too.
I think if the main plant stem's intact, you should be ok.Comment

Have had the same problem this week, trying to harden plants off when a garden chair blew across garden and chopped 2 courgette plants.
Hoping as main stem still in tact they will survive but couldn't resist urge to sow 2 more seeds (just in case 
).

Thanks for your replies. Will keep my fingers crossed. Daisybee - I carefully carried my plant through the house, round the path, across the lawn to my vege patch, then - while telling a neighbour that I hoped it wouldn't be damaged by the weather - dropped it! I immediately went and planted another two seeds as well.Comment

Oh dear Glenisita, I'm sorry but you've made me grin - I thought it was only me that did things like that I will now confess to what happened to some other poor plants of mine - as a newbie to this gardening business I duly put plants out to harden off - took notice of wind and being a fool placed several trays on the garden table! Guess what? The wind blew a tray of poppies and a tray of caulis off the table and of course they had to land upside down!
I was in the shed while all this was happening and went back to a 'bombsite' where my plants had been! Thankfully nearly all seem to have survived and I have learnt another lesson - plants much safer on floor!

Hopefully I'll end up with a garden full of very strong plants. Anything that survives my clumsiness will have to be pretty hardy!Comment
