  • Broad Beans - move them outside?

    Hi
I've sown some Masterpiece Longpod broad beans in a cool indoors room and they're now starting to poke through.
Last year my indoors sowings became soft and leggy. To avoid this do you think I'm ok to move them outside to a coldframe?

If so should i wait until they get bigger or get them out straight away? Will they need hardeninig off?

Sorry for all the questions - all advice really appreciated.

mine are in the greenhouse [unheated] outside. When they get to about 2 or 3 inches, I'll plant them out.
    they're tough old things

Broadies are very hardy so you should be fine to move them. I sow all mine outside or in cold frame just until they pop up, then they go straight out.
If you move them to a cold frame I would think they would not need hardening off, but if you want to put them straight outside after being in a house then you would need to, or it might be too much of a shock.

Mine are in the bed outside already, have been there for about 10 days.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Mine too - and out of the ones planted in the autumn that died in the snow, 2 are growing back. They are double hard those broadies.

I planted them straight outside in one of the raised beds, they are all coming up and doing well. I would harden them off and then plant them outside.

My grandchildren sowed some seed in November. I say "sowed" loosely - they pushed some bean seeds into the ground. I had forgotten about them until I saw this post and went to look. They are about 4" high and look very healthy. They must be hardy after the freezing winter we've had!

Mine are outside, have been for three weeks, growing away merrily in a half water butt, cold nights but they've really hardened off well, currently about 6/8" high.

And it's getting warm enough to set some flowers, embryonic buds coming through nicely now.
