  • Brassicas

I have been given some seedlings, spring cabbage, winter kale and early purple sprouting. A kind friend of my farthers gave them to him for me, but he forgot to ask about planting out.

They are around 3 inches tall

Should I be planting these out now?

Yes get them in and netted as soon as possible, it's getting late for winter brassicas now.

Yes you can plant these out now, preferably under netting as the cabbage white butterflies are about laying eggs on anything brassica.

The spring cabbage aren't so desperate to be planted. I've just sown some and they aren't up yet. I will sow some more at the beginning of August.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

On my list still to plant:
                Cabbage Spring Hero
                Choy Sum
                Kohlrabi
                Komatsuna Torasan (winter hardy)
                Mibuna
                Mizuna
                Pak Choi
Of these I'm expecting the cabbages, kohlrabi and mizuna to stand outside all winter (they did last year) and hoping the komatsuna and mibuna will live in the growhouse as cut and come again (I've not grown these before). The others will probably need eating before winter, if the slugs leave me anything to eat!

I have Spring Hero cabbage to sow end of July, beginning of August. I've grown it before and was well impressed. From what i remember I was cutting it into May/June the following year.

I can never seem to get the timing of cabbages right. Ideally I want cabbage after the PSB and kale is finished ( or I've had enough) but not this time of year as there are peas and beans. I realise it is not an exact science but if I wanted cabbage for March into May, when and what should I sow?
