  • Borlotti beans

    Hello all,

I'm contemplating growing some of these (next year most likely now?!) - they look so beautiful! However, I'm relatively short of space, I have a 3m x 1m raised bed which is pretty full.

So my question is, has anybody grown them, and if so how big do the plants get compared to your average pea / bean? I'm currently growing sugar snaps which are about 6-7ft tall but not massively wide / bulky

    Thanks

You can grow them up a wigwam, just like runners, probably best if you are short of space, or there are the dwarf variety. Which are ready earlier, I'm picking the dwarf ones already. The wigwam ones will probably leave to use as dried beans, they were good last year.

I`m growing "DWARF FRENCH BEAN SUPREMO BORLOTTI". To date they are no more than 18" high. I planted them in the middle of my runner bean frame, thinking they would grow taller. With hind sight a normal bed would have been better, maybe with a cane for support.

I was just going to say that there are definitely 2 sorts, a dwarf one and a climbing bean - so which sort have you got?

As Dorothy says you can just treat them like any French Bean, dwarf or runner, different varieties have different growth habits so read the details re bushiness etc. The ones I'm growing this year have some really prettily coloured flowers - almost like pink sweet peas.

I have the climbing variety and they're up to the top of eight foot canes stuck about one foot into the ground.

They are usually just varieties of French beans so will grow as those be they either dwarf or climbing. I fill a 6' x 4' bed with climbing ones which lets me store them and use in stews over winter.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?
