  • Borlotti bean advice please

I have dwarf and climbing Borlotti's all growing well. Am intending to leave on the plant and allow them to dry and then continue to dry indoors, ready for use during the winter. Is it ok to leave them all on the plants or should I pick and use some? And is there any difference in the dwarf and the climbing variety? Will they both dry and store ok?

    Thanks

I've dried dwarf ones on the plant and they have kept fine, still got a few from last year. I don't think that there is any difference in the treatment of dwarf and climbing beans. You can also eat the beans fresh and I think as mange tout. I haven't tried them as I have loads of French beans.

Yes I also have loads of French and Runners, the Borlotti's are nice used like French, so might still use some if I run out of the others!

You can pick some young as normal french beans, pick some fresh but with developed beans and shell them like haricot or leave them to dry on the plants.

AFAIK the difference between the climbing and dwarf beans (apart from height) is that the climbers mature and crop over a longer period than the dwarf (which develop and crop around the same time - although last year I only got 6 pods from my dwarfs so that wouldn't have been a long time even if they matured one at a time)

The original title was very funny, Dotty. Sounded like some unmentionable female disease

Borlotti beans are French beans although I tend to refer to my drying beans as Borlotti and the ones I eat fresh as French. Bit daft now I think about it

Trying to think what it could be and failing, why did I miss out?
