I planted my comfrey roots about 3 weeks ago one of the 10 had a shoot on it which has now grown quite big. The other 9 were just a piece of root. There is nothing sprouting out from these. How long before I see any life from them, I am reluctant to have a furtle incase I disturb them

Comfrey are an absolute nightmare in my plot, I have to hoe every week in order to decapitate any new seedlings that appear in my beds. At least half a dozen appear each week and this is my third year trying to get rid of the blighter but its still coming up now.The day that Microsoft makes something that doesn't suck ...

Bal, last year I started mine off in pots. I thought the little blighters had died as they took ages and showed no signs of life but they eventually came up, had last season without being harvested and this year I have a nice and healthy patch of comfrey.
I've got a few cuttings in pots at the minute to go under the hawthorn hedge on my new plot - figure that not only will it make use of the unusable space under the hedge it'll create a curtain of leaves above ground (which should hopefully shade out weeds at the back of the hedge creating a deep shade weeds can't thrive in) and roots below ground (that will slow any root creep from surviving weeds).

When I did my first batch 3 years ago see Alans Allotment: Comfrey Bad Boys... it took 23+ days from some sign of life. I took cuttings and leafs and transplanted from one plot to another this year and they took straight away. I also took root cuttings and they have been in the greenhouse in loo rolls for about 3 weeks and I have not seen anything yet.Last edited by Cadalot; 25-05-2016, 05:03 AM.Comment

Give it time. My husband weeded my herb plot a couple of years ago and inadvertently managed to chop off and spread some of the root. It took a couple of months for anything to happen but now I've a much bigger comfrey plot.Comment

I bought the bocking 14 comfrey as the seeds/flowers are meant to be sterile. Guess what. Yesterday I noticed that 5 out of 10 of the comfrey roots have sprouted. And it looks like the others will be up soon.. Typical just as I start to think about throwing in the towel, up they pop.Dogs have masters, cats have slaves, and horses are just wonderfulComment

3 days later and I have 11 pots with little green shoots so I'm half way there. I have mine in a heated propagator in the garage so the bottom heat seems to help.Originally posted by Jay-ell View Post

The plants are as tough as old boots.
When we moved mid Nov last year I dug up our 6 month old comfrey and shoved it in a bucket. At the end of Jan it was planted into a smallish hole even though it looked dead.
Now, a few months on the bee's are all over it and it is growing brilliantly.
