  • Black Opal Tomato

Has anybody grown the Black Opal tomato? This variety seems to have been developed by Gourmet Genetics as an improved version of Black Cherry.

It's available from T&M, and also other seed suppliers.

I've grown Black Cherry and Chocolate Cherry, found them very similar, and liked them both. Is Black Opal really much better?

I grew black opal last year and found them lovely. I'm growing them again this year.

I grew black opal last year, I liked the taste and the colour looked great mixed in with other varieties but I wont be growing it this year

I found the fruits extremely prone to cracking, so much so that it was hard to get any sort of crop after the first couple of trusses

The trick, as with Black Cherry, is to pick them just before they look ripe - any later and they will split.

I grew it last year and wasn't terribly impressed. Mind you, it was in a pot and kept blowing over. Can't recommend it for pots, but will probably be fine in the ground or greenhouse.

It fruited quite well considering it was outdoors in a northern climate but I had problems with the fruit splitting. They tasted nicer than the red and yellow tumbler-type toms I also grew.
