  • Best tomatoes for pots and where to buy plants

    Hello all

Well first of all I'm a relative newcomer to growing things so beware of silly questions. I'm just about to move and in my current house was helping a housemate with a few tomato plants which would go out in the garden, as well as waiting for some from her friend. This leaves me with no plants to call my own! I have access to plentiful supplies of flower buckets and there should be room for quite a few of them in my new garden but sadly due to the landlord I will only be restricted to these. I'm thinking of having a few dwarf bean plants as well as one or two courgettes.

So, what tomatoes grow best in those buckets and where can I get them from mail order that is reasonably priced and reliable? I'm in Cambridge if that affects the choice of variety and sadly don't have a car to get out to any garden centres. (Or at least that wouldn't be an easy trip)

Any help would be greatly appreciated, likewise for other suggestions on what to grow provided I can start after the 10th of June and harvest by the end of September

Ay tomatoes will grow in them given support [if cordon - no need for bush ones, they'll just fall over the top of it]
If your housemate still has tomatoes, do what's been suggested on the armpit threads...wait until one of the sideshoots is big enough, nip it out, place in water, wait till it grows shoots, then pot up into mpc.
You'll have identical plants to the parent plant, i/e. your housemates plant.

School fates/carboots or asking on freecycle are good sources of tom plants if the garden centre is too far. Probably cheaper too!

IF you can't wait for your friends plant to mature a little you could try Suttons Seeds 6 Tumbler £7-99.
A nice easy to grow bush tomato producing loads of sweet cherry toms ideal for pots or hanging baskets.

Marshalls seeds do 3 Sungold (cordon) £4-75p these also produce loads of sweet cherry toms. I grow them in flower buckets with no problem

I have used jane lane nursery before they have a great selection of tom plants. The price is not bad but postage is £4 per order but if your ordering a few it not too bad.

          Also try ebay

your post doesn't say where you are. If anywhere near Bristol, our allotment association is having a plant sale tomorrow (Sat 26th) and I have some fine excess tomatoes looking for a new home
