  • Best bean for baked beans

I want to stop buying Heinz, so want to find a good bean to "bake"!

Any recommendations and where to buy also would be greatly appreciated

You'd need a load of beans Lisa, why don't you want to use Heinz?

I prefer to make my own too (much nicer and self sufficient) and find that any of the bollotti types work and have used the large runner beans a bit too (can't remember the name but got them from Real Seeds, massive white beans).

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Can't help I'm afraid as I think baked beans are the devil's own food, despite my family trying to persuade me otherwise. Hope someone gives you a better answer!

Homemade are much nicer than the tinned ones

Might not be as easy/cheap to get hold of tinned baked beans in Spain, Spunky.

Any saved bean seeds, they taste more or less the same regardless of size,if it's the smaller size and color your after, the nearest i can think of are, blue lake, yellow french climbers, cobra and some of the dwarf bean seeds, cheroke trail of tears are smaller but dark brown,

Cannellini are pretty close to the tinned beans. And easy to grow.

                      Baked beans.

Devils food and only edible with buttered toast below and a fried egg above.

                      Cheers, Tony

I think they are called 'gigante'- I have got some but am not sure when to sow.
No matter:the allotment is lovely, the tadpoles have legs, my sea kale has germinated and I am glad to be home.

Sow them the same time as normal runners and Frenchies, in my case that's in about a months time.

I think haricot beans will be the closest.

Though are you attempting to replicate heinz or make something similiar. I often attempt similiar. This then means i can grab any random bean of my fancy and spruce it up however i fancy at the time.

                              We use haricot beans too.
Homemade are much less sugary and more tomatoey ....really yummy with finely chopped red peppers too!

I stopped buying Heinz a few years ago as my sweet tooth isn't so sweet anymore since being out here.
When we do buy baked beans , I actually much prefer Te$ co's value beans these days.
