I am growing Alto F1 Hybrid beetroot. I have never grown any sort of beetroot before and just wanted to know does this look normal or not?

It looks to me as if you haven't planted them deep enough and they are 'shanking' ?

Agree with Snadger, if I start in modules I always plant to the first true leaves, if sown direct I earth up if required

Thanks, so if I dig them deep enough they will be okay?

Snadger....not heard the term shanking before...can you describe / explain it further?

Carrie's beetroot does indeed look like it's not planted deep enough, but it also looks like it's split....either that, or a slug has munched it's way along the surface?

They are planted inside the flat Nicos. I was just seeing if I could grow beetroot indoors. I have planted them in a really deep container. I have never grown beetroots before.

Shanking is a woodiness to the shank of the plant usually seen in brassicas methinks.

Would I need to start again with them or will they be okay if planted a bit deeper?

Should be fine planted deeper (up to the bottom/seed leaves)

Alto is a long cylindrical beetroot rather than the typical round versions....I think you would need a very deep container for them.

                      How long do they grow?
