    Beetroot not a wash out.

    Sowed some beetroot Boltardy in spring, fairly thinly!

    Forgot to thin them.

    Sort of abandoned them as the tops didn't seem over big.

    Tidying up at week end and by eck they were some good uns.

    Dug a few and cooked them, yummy. Although everything is now bright red including my fingers.
    Looks like a chain saw massacre in the kitchen.

    Still some left.

      I wish I could grow nice beetroot. Mine have been in since about April and are still only about an inch across. I thought beetroot were supposed to be an easy and quick crop to grow!

      Next year they are getting more sunshine and richer soil in the hope of some bigger roots that are at least vaguely round rather than long and thin.

        Maybe feeding with bone meal will help swell the roots Pen

          Beetroot seems a bit hit and miss with me when I sow them outside, don't know if it is slugs, birds or both that go for them.
          This year I sowed in small pots/modules and planted these out about 3inches apart. They seemed to do OK - particularly the ones I planted in a double 10ft. row in a polytunnel - in fact there are still a few of those left at about 1/2 to 1 kg each. Take a bit of cooking. Another lot did well behind a greenhouse where they were in a sheltered spot. So I would say to do well they do like a bit of warmth and good soil.
          The main tap root did seem rather stunted of the module grown beetroot and generally they come up a lot easier than those sown in situ but the size of root and flavour don't seem to be affected by trans-planted.
