I do the same as Bridget . I start them off in early January by sowing the seeds into pots , then i start to harden them off while in the pots outside under a bit of fleece or in a cold frame during March so by early April they are ready to get planted out.
I am going to try sowing them in December this year though to give them a bit of a head start and take a bit of pressure off the January/ February sowing Frenzy.

I've always sown mine in seed trays in late December, pricked them out at the crook stage and planted out in April. This has always worked well, I keep them in a cold greenhouse once they've germinated. Too much heat can make germination stop though so I never use a heated propagator, but just put them in a cool room. This year I'm going to try them in cell trays, just two or three seeds in each cell then thin to the strongest as the pricking out seems to be the dodgy part where you lose some.Into each life some rain must fall........but this is getting ridiculous.

Could anybody help me. I'm growing Bedfordshire Champion from seed, they are sprouting already after a week. when should i plant them out and how deep a bed do they need? Will 15cm be enough?Comment

Onions are shallow rooted so will grow fine in 6"of soil. They are gross feeders though so a goodly amount of FYM dug in before planting out would be a good idea. Don't know where you are (maybe include that in your profile) so can't suggest when you might safely be able to plant out. Certainly too early up here yet.Comment

My children were overly keen to get started (nothing to do with me honest!
) and sprinkled a pinch of seeds into a smallish pot which has been in a pop up greenhouse for about 3 weeks. The seedlings are now between 2 and 6 cms tall (estimate) but with reading more about onions (first year working from seed) im terrified to touch them in case i lose them all! Planted a row up in a raised bed today as weather is looking fab and I got hold of some fleece the other day so feeling better about protection if the temp drops again, will keep fingers crossed for some happennings soon.
