    Bean Virus

    It looks like I have a virus in my climbing borlotto beans -

    It starts like this.

    Then goes like this

    Before the leaves go yellow and drop.

    The new growth is fine, but the problem is working its way up the plant.

    So should I remove the effected plants - will it spread as I also have runners, dwarf haricot, Canadien kidney and cosse violetta all close by?

    I've had a google and this doesn't look like any of the standard bean diseases listed here Edible bean disease and disorder identification : Vegetables : University of Minnesota Extension

    The nearest picture I can find to your leaves is red spider mite damage. This would be unusual outside but not unheard of if it has been very warm and dry. I would pick off all the damaged leaves and either burn or bin them, and spray the whole plant with water (which the mites don't like). The only problem would be if this isn't spider mite and is something that is spread in water... But beans quite like a good soaking so I doubt you would do too much harm.

      Thanks Penellype - I coudn't find a match, either.
      I hadn't thought about RSM but as the weather has been mostly mid thirties plus in the last few weeks with only one day of a couple of hours of drizzle, it may well be. Off for a look

        Aphids will spread the virus, so you should remove the effected plants.

        I think it's seed born, of course aphids may have brought it to your beans in the first place.

          Umm, can't see any mites even with my specs off!
          And I've also noticed that on one plant that splits right at the base, on one stem the leaves are terrible and the other one is untouched - climbing up the same pole. Curious!

              It could just be the excessive heat. Mine in the tunnel don't look half as good as the ones outside. Take off any badly affected leaves and give them a good soaking.

                Your photos look a bit like bean yellow mosaic virus, which is spread by aphids. I hope not, as the only treatment is to pull the plants out
