Sorry not quite sure what you mean. Snail barrier perhaps?

A line of vaseline on what? What are you trying to protect, and is it inside or outside? Or do you need a way to stop ants coming into the house?
        Location - Leicestershire - Chisit-land
        Endless wonder.

          Rolls of fly paper perhaps,

Failing that my wife's bread and butter pudding has special adhesive powers.

Someone in this room that I am in has suggested "Vic".
Don't laugh, it has its merits, especially if its chilly.
Feed the soil, not the plants.
            (helps if you have cluckies)

Think this is what you want:

                  Grease bands/RHS Gardening

If you don't want to use bands, you could maybe try this:

Vitax 200g Fruit Tree Grease: Amazon.co.uk: Garden & Outdoors

When I lived in Spain a few years ago you could buy something called ZUM. It was an aerosol and ants would not cross it.

A glue trap ... Is there anything more cruel?

They're either feeding off sap from the tree or farming aphids. Either way, it won't harm the tree nor reduce the crop of apples.
