  • Banana Shallot Sets

Anybody know where I can get some ?

I've only seen one place selling them online and they were £4.95 for 500g and £4.50 p&p

If not sets are they easy to grow from seed ? Am I to late to start from seed this year ? AND where can I get seed ?

    Thanks

You can get the seed from any online seed supplier [I googled it and Thompson and Morgan came up first]...PW is the banana shallot expert and will possibly be along with additional advice any minute now...well, he is ill at the moment so any day now...

I bought a load of banana shallots in Lidl for 49p a pack, if that helps. I reckon they will grow!

They were sold for eating Bob.

Real banana shallots will only grow from seed. They do not split from sets like conventional shallots, they just run to seed. If you can get hold of some Lidl banana shallots (ensure they are French), plant them 6" apart and they will run to seed giving you a fabulous crop of seeds for next year.

I have a bit of seed left if you want some Bob, pm me your address and I will get them sent off asap.

Christmas Ideally, you will get a crop if you sow now though.

I meant the ones I bought from Lidl - but thanks for reminding me I still have to sow the last of the banana shallot seeds you sent me - see if I get any to germinate this year

Echalion is a newish term for long (longue) shallots and does include bananas but is not restricted to them.

My feeling is, as that bananananana shallots dont split like true shallots, but only perhaps into 2 and flower at the same time, they are really more akin to an onion, hence the new classification.

                        Oh poop!

I grew banana shallots too close together this year and so have loads and loads of diddy undersized ones. I'd thought to save them for sets for next year... looks like that won't work either.

Still, thanks for saving me the wasted effort!

Pickle them whole, we do with our small shallots.

I experimented with Lidl banana shallots this year but they did not grow. I think that they had been treated with anti-sprouting chemical.

                              Piggie,
If you've got any seed spare, I've had a disastrous 2010 with ordinary shallots, and I'm only going to grow Nanas next year. Could you spare some more seed for me this Christmas-time?
Swop you a tin of Quality Street in my lap?! (Private Joke Peeps, obviously...X)
