    Bamboo Advice

    We have a large tub of bamboo in the corner of our patio. I'm wary of planting it anywhere in case of it invading and becoming a pest. Himself wants to plant it out as we don't get a lot of privacy in the garden and it could provide some screening, plus he'd like to harvest the bamboo canes eventually for use in the garden.

    Any advice? Can it be safely planted out anywhere? Could it be harvested for canes at some point?

    I'd plant it Pot and all, that way it can't spread. It's hell to dig up.

      Possibly depends on the variety but I haven't found mine invasive at all

        Totally depends on the species.....is it spreading or clump forming ?

          Rosie, depends on which variety it is! Although most "Bamboo's" are described as thuggish, I opted for a Chinese "Fargesia Robusta" which on the base of the label in bold capital letters states "Non Proliferating Plant"

          Still taking no chances! and in a pot they shall remain! And strongly advise you do the same! Unless you have a huge garden n room for it?

          As Richard say's, once it gets a grip, it's a Sod n half to get out

          and yeah! You can harvest the canes!

            I grow two in the ground at the allotment a large golden one and a black one for canes, they both grow up to 4m ( 3 m at the moment after 3 years).
            I was told they would be really invasive so I planted next to my comfrey separated from the rest of the lottie by a 1 m path. Although it grows fast vertically there doesn't seem to be a problem with spreading & it keeps me in canes up to 8 ft high.I get about 20 a season
