Hi Philmebeli and welcome to the Vine. I like your name (Fill me belly ). Sorry can't help on the asparagus but you'll get plenty of friendly advice on here.
Usually you buy crowns (roots) in early spring and plant then, I have seen pot grown asparagus at a local garden centre but they were EXPENSIVE!!!
I have a somewhat similar problem - I've germinated asparagus seed (Connovers Collosal) which grew really well, but they're still in pots in the greenhouse due to various things like working full time, a new grandson, and total disorganisation. Do I overwinter them in the greenhouse or take a chance and plant them on the lottie?
I'm sort of hoping that they grow OK from an autumn planting, as i have ordered some 'autumn planting crowns. This thread got me a bit worried, so I've done a bit of a 'google' (other search angines are available )and came up with the following page: http://www.growfruitandveg.co.uk/gar...5/november.php
You really need to dig an asparagus trench/bed well in advance of planting, a good couple of feet deep and manure well. In early spring raise up the middle of the trench with soil to approx 6 - 8 inches below soil level before planting your crowns. You can't cut any spears for a couple of years but leave the ferns on till autumn and when they go yellow cut them back to just above ground level. You could collect the seed and have a go at propogating from seed in the meantime. Manure well after cutting back. Looking forward to a good crop next year 4 years in the making
