  • Asparagus in a tub?

I am the only one who likes asparagus in myfamily so only need to grow a small ammount. I have access to plastic water barrels and wondered about growing maybe three crowns in half a plastic barrel? Would this work, and how many spears per year can I expect to get from one barrel?

The conventional reply to this is no you can't, because asparagus has huge, deep roots with a spread of 5ft or more. However you might find this interesting:

I was watching this when I was thinking of using containers and small beds at the ends of my paths https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KoeBIw9YIrs but I finally decided on giving them a bed of their own see Alans Allotment: Asparagus

I have 5 crowns in tubs that were free from DT Brown last year that I couldn't find a place for on the lottie so was forced to do it. They are still alive and managed to sprout feathery stalks last year and only died off when my Asparagus on the lottie also gave up with the foliage. I'm expecting them to regrow this year but hopefully I will find a permanent spot on plot 2 they can call home.
