  • Asparagus question?

    Hi everyone

I moved plots in Feb this year and took my 3 year old asparagus plants with me. Just under half reappeard this year (although sickly!!). My question is should I buy more 1 year old crowns to fill in the gaps or start again with all new crowns and just be patient.

    Thanks

I have had this problem but with a bed I planted last year that came up in patches. I think the very cold start this spring set back a lot of freshly planted crowns. I have just filled in the gaps with young crowns this week and put a very thick mulch on to avoid the same thing happening next spring, hopefully. It means I'll have one year old crowns and two and three year old crowns in the same bed but the ones that did survive the cold deserve their chance to grow on. Your sickly looking survivors should look better next year, but protect both your old crowns and your new crowns from frosts this winter and keep your fingers crossed. Funny ol' thing asparagus.
Oh and remember to change the soil where you are going to replant otherwise they might not take.
