  • Asparagus Crowns

I'm looking to order some, any recommendations re varieties, the books seem to have two or three varieties in them, just wondered what you've found to be the best.

Not at all, as it's a 'permanent' fixture we want to get it right.

There are quite a lot of new-fangled hybrid varieties out there. I grow Dutch fi (supposedly all male but not) crowns. Gijnlym, Grolym and Backlym...because my Mum is Dutch...and partly because they were available 6 years ago. I have used these to seed another bed.

Before that I grew Connivar's Colossal a trad English OP variety strong growth, big spears and a flavour that I still think takes some beating.

My experience with asparagus has been so patchy - I planted Connover's collossal originally but only some of them took and others sent up one tiny shoot then died - I now have a mixture of varieties, so my advice it to put in any one that seems to be growing strongly! It also means I have shoots at different times and some are red, some green!
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

Depends how much you like it/ how many people you know. I'd say 24 is a reasonable worthwhile bed.
