    Apache potatoes

    Browsing the veg in the supermarket, as you do, I came across some very small red potatoes called Apache, noticing that a few where sprouting I bought six, they are now planted in the polytunnel.

    Has anyone grown these?, do you get many off one plant?, do they flower? if so, do you wait until the flowers wilt before harvesting?

    So many questions, so little time

    I grew Apache last year & had a good crop, I also have a builders bag of them which were planted last November under a large cloche. They should be ready to harvest in the next few weeks. Regarding flowers, there are conflicting opinions. Some say to let the flowers & haulms die, other say to remove the flowers as they take the energy from the tubers in order to make seed. The choice is yours as removing the flowers as it is of no detriment to the crop.

      I have put my question here because it is spud-related and I apologise because it must have been asked dozens of times, but browsing quickly I can't find the answer.
      I am growing Charlotte potatoes in a container and the leaves are just pushing through the surface. Can someone tell me:
      • when do I start earthing them up, ie what height do the leaves have to be, or is it straight away?
      • do I cover the leaves when I earth them up?
      • how often should I water them. The earth is pretty dry with this recent warm weather.

          Again there are different trains of thought when growing in containers. Some folk earth there tatties up as they show through, yes you cover the leaves. I personally fill the container with compost to the top when I plant the seed tattie thereby no earthing up required. I don't water until the flowers show although that may not be correct. Potty will tell you exactly what to do when he comes along.
