  • Anyone tried growing mushrooms?

I wondered if anyone had given it a try and whether it was easy or not? Still wondering whether it is a good idea or not.

Likewise, tried last year but didn't work. Bought the plugs that hammer into a log.
Heard someone on the radio the other day say that they won't eat mushrooms because they are related to athlete's foot !

Yup, tried using a packet of 'thingies' (can't think of the word) from Suttons; planted them exactly as they said using well-composted horse manure, etc, etc.

All I got were stacks of yucky mushrooms/toadstools that grew in a day then flopped over attracting loads of flies (or was that the manure).

        Never again!!

Humm... I love mushrooms... wonder what athlete foot tastes like... any volunteers?
The proof of the growing is in the eating.

i got a box, with the compost and everything, for button mushrooms, im told that they were much nicer than shop ones, ( again like most things i dont eat them! ) it was last autumn, it didnt sem to work, but it did eventualy, it was growing fine, box full of muhrooms till they were tken over by fungus gnats, i learnt that you need to keep it in a big plastic bag to keep them out, sprayed the whole lot with neem oil, and then the next crop was fine
I just moved the box from the upstairs bathroom ( im not a very tidy person!) and it has started growing more they werent there in february when i used the box to stack the chitting potatoes ontop

If you grow the boxes keep it sealed, the lids dont seal well enough, im just thinking of buying more and havi9ng another go

Thanks for your replies. That has put a lid on that thought - I won't bother now. Think I'll have a go at making some apple wine instead in a few months when the cooking apples are ready.

Sorry that none of you have grown mushrooms but in a way I'm glad as tried last year and didn't work for us either. Won't be trying that again. However, have had more success with making wine (not from apples though as you need to mulch them up and need a decent size fruit press to be able to do that - soft fruit far easier) so Dianne1234567 I'd do that instead - far more enjoyable.

I'm glad this was posted cos I tried seeding the lawn with spawn and also putting some of those plugs in a freshly cut birch log a couple of years ago. I followed the instructions exactly and the result was zilch. It's good to know that i'm not as incompetent as I thought I was.

Thanks toastie, I might just do that. My OH happens to know someone who has a fruit press he has can borrow for a bit, and we have lots of apples on our x2 apple trees, so that is where those thoughts came from. Still we'll see.

Seems I am in good company then, my mushroom plugs don't appear to have worked either.

Kept the logs covered up for 6 months, uncovered them and certainly they were covered in micilium(?) but no mushrooms
I am certain that the day my boat comes in, I'll be at the airport.
