  • Anyone germinating chillies yet??

I'm just thinking about starting them off on damp kitchen paper as this worked well last year...anyone else started yet?

Yes, I started some on boxing day. Soaked them, then chitted on damp kitchen roll, in a plastic tub on top of the radiator. They germinated in about 2 days and are now in compost in the airing cupboard where they'll stay until they break the surface. I've got some more on the go too but they're not as quick for some reason. The ones that germinated quickly are supposed to be ghost chillies or something of the like, that my brother gave me. Not sure though, as they weren't completely inedible when we tried them.

Mine went into compost in the heated propagator yesterday - the first task of the year! Always good to get going...

Will start my first lot off in a couple of weeks time and before the end of Jan at the latest. Have sown about this time before and found that they benefit from slightly increased light levels but it does depend on your situation / location.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

I tend to do mine end of January / 1st week of February. If I used grow lights I'd probably start sowing early Jan, but I prefer to grow according to the season, and natural light just isn't plentiful enough at this time of year to make any difference if sowing now or a month from now.

I have some BHUT JOLOKIA CHOCOLATE to sow but I think it's too early, I have an electric propagator so the issue isn't getting them up it's giving them enough light. A window sill isn't good enough as it's West facing. I'll probably start at the end of Feb and when germinated let them spend daytimes in the greenhouse and night in the house . . . till it's warmed up a bit.

I was thinking about this today, have been thinking about it on and off since October.

Might do some later if I get 5 mins.

and tomatoes.... where is the 'Early Tomato' thread? Have I missed it, or am I too eager? Was thinking about risking a few of my stash of seeds - I have a 'few' spares.

I must do some Aubergines. I always leave them too late. I had one poorly looking plant last year, I nursed it and we ended up with 5 or 6 lil' Aubergines.

                      Thanks for reminding me.

Is that Chris the Aubergine man?

I've just received 3 packs of chilli seeds I bought online - all really hot varieties. So I'm now contemplating purchasing a heated propagator to get them started

^ I did not do mine last night as I was hoping. I will be chitting mine at lunchtime today on damp kitchen roll inside a plastic bag. This will go in the airing cupboard. I do have a heated prop, but I find it is a bit 'too heated' - perhaps I am using it all wrong (it only has off and on)!

right, this morning...got 22 espelette chillies sat on damp kitchen roll. Any spare seedlings will go into a new seed/plant swap we're setting up in our locality!
