  • Any tips for growing samphire?

    Hi All

Does anyone have any growing tips for samphire from seed.

I have some samphire seed but have never grown it or tasted it but fancy trying it, I know they need slightly salted water as they are used to sea spray but what about starting from seed, is it best to start in a propagator or what etc.

They grow on salt marsh and thus get inundated very often with sea water, covered in sea spray and grow in mud.

    As for the seed.................try google?

      I found this...

"The most critical issue for growing Samphire is that it requires saline conditions. Whether grown in the open ground or in a container it is best watered with a saline solution (1 teaspoon of proper sea salt in a pint of water).

Samphire prefers a light sandy soil (or well drained) and a sunny position. A warm sheltered position is ideal and protection from the worst of our Winters will ensure continuity from year to year."

so...I'd use a sandy soil in a propagator just to germinate- and water it with the saline as described.
Don't think I'd let it get too warm though as our sea-sides tend to be somewhat 'nippy' don't they???

      Piccies eh????
