  • Alliums: To water or not?

I have a raised bed planted late March with Onions (red & white) Shallots and Garlic. The bed is quite free draining and has a layer of compost (home made) on top, which effectively the sets and cloves were planted in.
My question is, should I be watering them? The surface compost is very dry, but about the depth of my index finger is cooler, and very slightly damp.
The main reason for my concern is the shallots and some of the garlic are starting to yellow at the tips. I had a brief furtle and all seem to be at the "Slightly thicker than a pencil all the way down" stage.

To wet or not to wet? that is the question.

P.S. It hasn't rained properly here for about two weeks and has been hot and sunny for the last 5 days or so.

I have started watering mine - I reckon they will need moisture to help them swell. (I could be wrong - didn't have to worry about it last year)

I would definitely water them! Give the soil a really good soaking then keep an eye on the moisture levels. If you think its dry then water (but not in blazing sunshine). Like us, most plants struggle when it's too hot, or if there are drought conditions. If your soil is free draining you shouldn't have a problem with water logging, and you definitely won’t if this weather continues. You'd be surprised at how quickly the soil can dry out.
A good beginning is half the work.
Praise the young and they will make progress.

I water mine. Others don't water theirs.

I water if they look dry, but not often. I also water if they look dry and have just been put in....for a few days.

Also, if the soil isn't clay, and draining too much [and I'll add more clay when they are harvested and before the next crop goes in.

Also, try mulching - sometimes it can boost the alliums and keeps the water in.

Thanks folks, I was hoping "to water" would be the prevailing advice, I will wait for it to cool down a little, then give them a soaking tonight.

Many moons ago I asked the same question - the general answer was no

I had at that time been watering the onions and frankly they came up c@£"p - this year I've left them alone and they are swelling nicely.......go figure!

I'm in the 'no' camp on this one too - something to do with encouraging them to rot if you water at this time of year.

It was in Digger's Diary, but I can't remember the detail, I'm afraid.

I usually am in the 'no' camp, but mine are drying out far too much and today they needed it.

I watered onions today as the earth seemed really dry when I checked down a couple of inches.

We've had nearly a week of hot, dry weather and neither us nor the onions are used to it.

We watered our sets today as its been dry for a week now and also very hot the last few days.

We planted them 4 x 6 inches which is very close to do well without some additional water during dry spells - 3 or 4 x 12 inches is the norm around here with absolutely no extra water, only rainfall and we're usually not short of that.

Oh dear, I've been watering mine everyday.
Do I take it that you shouldn't water onions then? Arrrgghh I'm a confused newbie now!
Its nice to be important but its more important to be nice

So the general concensus is don't water... unless they need watering
