  • Alkaline soil - can I add some

My PH kit I got from B&Q gives me a colour of dark green which is 8.0 - alkaline. Can I make the PH more neutral? I have some pelleted chicken manure, could I add that to the soil? It's pretty high in NPK..... but then I don't really want anything with to much Alkaline in it.

What are you intending to grow as what you have is okay for Brassicas

      It's mainly veggies. Carrots/collie/onions/spuds/lettuce - also strawberry.

According to the RHS: Acidifying soil is difficult and expensive.
Pine needles, sawdust and sulphur will increase the acidity levels

Instead of working against your soil try and work with it! There is an optimum soil ph for all plants but sometimes we just have to work with what we have.
The main group of veg, the brassicas, including cauli, cabbage, sprouts etc will thrive. The other veg you've mentioned will be ok in your soil but I would only grow early potatoes as they are less susceptable to scab caused by alkaline conditions. A bit of muck or compost in the tattie bed would be beneficial also.
Check your tap water also which may be alkaline. If so, use rain water to water plants!

PS The classic way to acidify soil is to use iron sequestrene, sulphate of ammonia (particularily good at giving brassicas a boost at this time of year) dig in peat or coir. Don't use superphosphate or woodash which have an alkaline effect. Chicken poo should be acid as it is full of ammonia but may have too much nitro for what you are growing!
