Advice on onion spacing & broccoli

    Advice on onion spacing & broccoli

    Firstly do I need to space out my red onion (Baron) or will they grow fine the way they are in the raised bed? If I need to space them out, how do I do it so I don't damage the roots/bulbs?



    Also,

    Is this normal for a broccoli plant as it looks a bit sparce and are they ready to plant out? (They looks too delicate).

    Did you grow your onions from seed? Re the broccoli, it needs hardening off before you plant it out - put it outside during the day for a week or so but make sure you protect it from birds, the bloody sparrows have defoliated my tray of beetroot seedlings!!!

      Don't apologise for asking questions. That's how people learn and many folks using the forum are more than happy to help.

      Using a kitchen fork or similar or even a pencil, gently loosen your onion plants . Aim to give them a minimum of 4" between plants. Gently tease those that are too close out of the ground and replant in a more suitable position firming and watering them as necessary.

      The larger broccoli plants look to be more than ready to plant out but harden them off first of all. In Future, maybe think about giving them individual pots so that there is no root disturbance when planting out. I'd leave the smaller broccoli plants for a while to grow on a bit before planting out.

        Rustylady yes I grew them from seed.

        I shall start hardening them off today even though they are on the floor of the greenhouse which has kept them cool. Thanks.

        I'm surprised the sparrows have ate the leaves, I would've thought slugs 'n snails would be the problem.


        Aberdeenplotter, cheers for the info. I shall space them out as soon as I'm done writing this.

        Those plants are in individual pots but there are kale and sprouts there too.

          Personally I would pot on the Broccoli plants into larger pots plant them right up to the seed leave's, then plant out in a couple or three weeks. Firm the compost around the stem well it will give them some stability.

          The pic will give you some idea on onion spacing, these are Red Baron too.

            I may just throw them in the raised bed tomorrow upto their first leaves & put a half 2L plastic bottle (lemonade, etc) over them as cloche protection and remove through the day.

            I spaced my onions out earlier, I think I have enough room. I'm impressed with your photo though, made me smile lots at the thought at what I could achieve
