  • advice for next step in tomatoes

Hi, I am growing tomatoes for the first time. I have germinated, using an elec. prop. a number of seeds. I attach photos.

tom 2 was sown 29th March and is mermande ( seeds bought in tenerife)
tom 3 & 4 sown apr. 2nd and is johnsons mermande (outdoor variety)

tom 11, 12 & 13 were sown 6 March and are the tenerife seeds.

They are all presently on windowsills covered with plastic bottles.

I have a plastic walk in greenhouse for the purposes of growing these, plus other veg.
I would like to know at what stage should I transfer to greenhouse and how to protect them. The GH gets very hot 25deg plus, so I unzip the door during the day at the moment.

I hope to eventually put in pots, as I am a container grower, to grow in greenhouse, using contents of a tom. growbag

By the look on the last photo on your 1st post on the thread, they tom seedlings are getting too hot - ends of their leaves going crispy? When they're small, with small roots, they can get too much sun & heat and can't cope with it.
They look to be growing okay, although maybe the compost is a bit wet? Anyway they don't need to be in 'plastic cloches' indoors after they've germinated. Tomatoes are relatively hardy, they just don't enjoy it nor grow lots, in colder weather. Don't let them get frosted though.
If you stand them outside in a plastic greenhouse be careful you don't fry them. If you stand them outside with no protection be careful they don't get wind burn when so small, or too much sun.
I think at the size they are a plastic greenhouse has the potential to fry them atm. In our current nice weather spell maybe stand them out during the day, but not yet in direct sunlight, to get them used to it. Or just leave them where they are on the windowsill if it gets plenty of light, but not with a plastic top.
        Good luck with them.

I'd agree with the above. The compost looks a bit on the wet side and they don't need the plastic bottles over them.

As the others have said the compost looks very wet and the sun could be tour worst enemy at the moment.

In that size of pot they will be OK for some time yet they have plenty of room to grow.
