Today I sowed the tomato's 3 varieties so far. Took another 50 cuttings (dahlia's & Chrysanths) and then as rain stopped play did some alterations to the lottie website & started the newsetter.oh, nearly forgot. 15 French beans bought this year brand spankers so they'd better grow or else .....

Calved one cow, taight a newborn calf how to suckle and treated a dying calf for bad scour - it now has a 50/50 chance of survival as opposed to 0/0 chance they gaveit last night

Rat, you never cease to amaze me. What a wonderful life you lead. Whose cattle were they? I bet they were glad you were on hand. Well done mate.

The cows are in the care of the lady I work for on Sundays - the one who is moving farms soon and has given me a budget of £5k for her new garden. She is overwintering them for some farmer from through the West Coast. Of the fifty in her care, she has had no problems until last night, and has only five left to calve.
My daughter thinks I'm a hero for saving them, the OH was pissed cause I was late home and therefore late for her Mother's Day meal at local eaterie !
You can please some of the folk all of time but not all the folk etc etc etc.
Still nothing in the garden - still too cold and too wet .

There will only be one chance to be a child and have a hero for a dad. Next year it will be Mother's day again.
I would plump for "Dad the hero" every time!

Today I put my first germinated seedlings (early red cabbage and broad beans) out in the shed to harden off. I'm so far behind all you lot!! Just trying to be patient with the weather. Bright sun early this morning. Then SNOW at lunch time. Now sunny again. Come on Spring, get your a**e in gear...

OK, so I know I'm new to this growing vegetables lark and I may be a little impatient.....but are my potatoes growing?

How long does it take for them to show? I only planted them 7 days ago so when can I expect to see growth? I've planted earlies, 2nd earlies and main crop.

Yours, the impatient gardener.

Depends how deep you planted them Simon.Probably another couple of weeks before you see the haulms coming through. Your 1st earlies should be ready to harvest in about 12 weeks or so depending on the variety so don't be too impatient.

I've planted some strawberry runners in baskets, a pot & under a plastic cloche in the ground. Makes this feel really insignificant when I read Rat's entry about saving calves lives!

If they are outside Simon I wouldn't expect anything to happen for 2-3 weeks then they'll really start to move once it warms up - it will warm up won't it

Well its been a real spring day here in the Vale of Pewsey. Warm when the sun was shining, but clouds blowing and the odd shower.

'Constructed' one of those big black compost bins - it looks like someone has half buried a portaloo/or tardis in the garden! Planted a 'dual' plum tree, and a lilac tree. Dug some border over using the new azada!!! Good stuff.

It's quite warm here today but is blowing a gale. Perhaps it was the wrong time to choose to cut down & dig up some penstemons which had gone old & woody as I had to dive around the garden catching the bits! I took some cuttings last year so will be able to replace them. They're penstemon 'Blackbird' & are very pretty but grow like weeds.I also planted out my 'Harlequin' potatoes in a potato barrel.

Potting up seedlings in my greenhouse. Painting the wood of the raised beds. Took some photos while the protective fleece is off the bed. Altered the auto vents so that they open a little sooner and finally potted on my cucumbers.

I've potted up 62 Lithops (living stones) today and had a good look round at the cuttings that have rooted. Time to move them to the coldframe methinks.
