  • 4 unrelated random questions

Four unrelated random questions, I didn't want to start lots of new threads.
1: I have some ericaceous compost left over from making a small border in the greenhouse for three blueberry twigs bought from the pound shop, can I just shove it on a veg bed, or will it bother stuff I intend to grow there?
2: Also, this border is next to my grapevine, will the compost bother the vine?
3: Can I plant seed potatoes outside yet?
4: Is it worth overwintering physalis or just planting new every year?
You may say I'm a dreamer... But I'm not the only one...

Ancee, questions 1 and 2. Shouldnt think you will have any problems with your ericacious compost.
planting potatoes outdoors...I have planted mine outdoors in the last week. They are under a south facing wall and covered with black plastic, so they are very sheltered.
I think you are more northerly than me so I cant really give you any first hand advice.
Dont have any advice to your question 4 but I am sure someone else will advise you.

question 4= Yes I think so...I have an overwintered physalis throwing out tons of healthy leaves right now, it looks at about the stage it reached last August.
I also have physalis yet to germinate in the prop. Last year we got small fruit in November.
My youngest (slightly weird) daughter adores the fruit straight from the bush and I suspect we won't have to wait till November this year!
If it works I'll be doing this every year from now on!

I would keep the compost bagged up cos you know what sods law is like. As soon as you scatter it, you'll need some. As for tatties, it's coming up to that time of year, just keep an eye on your overnight temps.

I am definitely not an expert, more of the wing it and see type - but I've planted my seed potatoes

I've planted them quite deep and hoping that by the time they've popped up we should be safe as houses. As I said though - I'm winging it so don't rely on me!

Thank you everyone. I had some pots with physalis I had cut them down as the leaves and stalks died. I emptied the pots on Sunday and new shoots were beginning so I quickly replanted them in the greenhouse border. I have eight little newbies on my bedroom windowsill too... Looks like we might have lots this year then!

Well, Leeds is just up the round from me, so I'll shove them in asap

Yeah, that's me too I do work out on paper what I want to grow and where to put it....but then so often it becomes a case of dig a hole in any available gap and bung it in

I've just got to clear the raised bed where I'm putting my Jerse...International Kidneys (probably tomorrow or Friday) and then they can go in. They're chitting well in the tunnel so I'll bung 'em in nice and deep and I'm sure they'll be fine

My first earlies will hopefully be going in next week when the kids can 'help'. Well all depending on the weather. If not I usually try and get them in first week in April. If you are worried about a frost you can fleece them up but I find that spuds are fairly hardy and as long as they are covered up so frost can't burn them they will be okay.

Brassicas prefer alkaline soil so avoid spreading the ercacious compost where you're planning on growing brassicas this year.
