  • Rocket totally stripped down to stalks

Within the space of 24 hours, the rocket in my polytunnel has been completely stripped, right down to the stalks - but nothing else seems to have been touched ! There is no sign of slugs or beetles - what else might it be ?

It really sounds like slugs or snails to me - unless you have a caterpillar or two in there... Cabbage white maybe?
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

By the way most of the beetles are friends not foes so I don't think they can be blamed

Sounds like caterpillars, they can be quite tiny and still eat huge amounts (then they become quite huge....)

        Endless wonder.

I would bet on it being slugs and snails mounting raids from behind that fence.

OK, I've got to back in tomorrow and find the little devils ! But if it's slugs or caterpillars, why don't they eat the luscious lettuce which is right next to the rocket ? Oh God, I'll go back in tomorrow and find they've eaten that next............ !

                The mystery is solved !
I went back into the polytunnel this morning, to discover that, yes indeed, the lettuce had been eaten overnight, as had 2 pea plants, 6 pak choi plants and some land cress.
I was checking over the strawberries, and what did I find cowering under the leaves ? A very small rabbit ! It was obviously hiding there last night when I shut up shop, then spent the night eating.
                It will eat no more............
