    Replacing glass on used GH with polycarbonate

    I have just acquired a used greenhouse, which is in need of a few new panes.

    I'm thinking maybe I could replace the 'north side' double panes with full height polycarbonate sheets, which would then give me enough glass for the other three sides.

    Is this sensible or not ?

    I actually think 4' x 2' sheets would work out cheaper than two 2' x 2' glass panes.

    Twin wall polycarbonate is very expensive. When I looked into pricing it would have been cheaper to buy a waltons type polycarbonate greenhouse rather than the equivalent amount of polycarbonate alone.

      TW 4mm can be expensive but if you look around there are deals to be had.

      e.g. 10, 1505mm x 610mm £65-50p.

            That's a good deal. If you go down this route just remember to use silicone adhesive as well as clips.

            I have a totally poly glazed GH and have no issue's with it what so ever.

              Check out second hand websites too. I've seen a few adverts over here where people have been shifting polycarbonate greenhouses that have lost panes or been damaged by wind. They can suffer damage easily in the wrong locations or as potty says, the panels are not secured well enough. Upshot is, the greenhouse is not functional, but its a cheap source of polycarbonate

                  one other thing to consider with using polycarbonate sheets is the reduction in sunlight, they will act as diffusers, depending on the actual sheet you use, there are varying degrees of opacity to some sheets, as I have found out by having both a glass house and a polycarbonate house the results of growing tomatoes of the same variety was quite different. With glass you can white wash to reduce the strength of the suns rays, with polycarbonate it is already diffuse and will continue to do so over time.
