  • Rebuilding a second hand greenhouse

I have taken down an old glass greenhouse and have been cleaning the frame ready for putting up on my alotment. Parts of it have some sort of foam/rubber strip on it and was wondering what this is for? Is this to protect the glass and would I be best replacing it or can I jyst put the glass straight into the frame.

You need the seal between the glass & the frame but check it is the right one first:

The metal frame expands and contracts with temperature at a different rate to glass so without the rubber the glass would get scratched and soon break. Wind movement also can damage the glass so the rubber is a buffer.
You really need to shop arround as the price for these seal vary wildly, and there are different type for ever greenhouse manufacturer. Try eBay as well as Amazon.
Don't be tempted to use silicone mastic, and there is a sticky backed foam rubber which is only suitable as a temporary solution.
