    Polystyrene boxes

    Hi, has anybody ever tried growing cucumbers or chillies or even tomatoes in polystyrene boxes in greenhouse, I've put 2 together sealed them round middle of course taken bottom out of top one therefore making a box about 18 inches deep. Do I line it with anything or just put MPC in and then just plant. I'm thinking on the lines that in will keep cold out at night and heat in from the daytime..or am I bonkers?

    I grow salad leaves in old polystyrene fish boxes with good success. Unless there has been something nasty in them I see no need to line them. Never done what you are doing so will be interested in the results.

      You will still need drain holes in the bottom, that stuff is water proof.

        Good point Bill, never thought to say as I use fish boxes and they already have drainage holes in them.

          I have been using polystyrene boxes for three or four years.Apartfromnot looking very pretty they'd other job of overwintering very well.I have parsley, coriander,spring onions salad leaves and my leek seedlings growing quite happily over winter.The boxes are virtually indestructible .This year I am about to plant my cucumbers in two!
