Grow Your Own Magazine

I have been fortunate to inherit some traditional glass cloches, (well a large stock of frames and lots of broken glass) and a 1950's book on cloche gardening. I have a large box of frames of varying shapes and sizes, only some of which match pictures in the book. And the few that were erected, use a combination of frames unlike any in the book! I wonder if any knows where I can find out more and if the different types vary for a good reason that I haven't worked out yet. A website link must surely exist - even if it's now considered "garden history"! I would be really grateful for any help or advice.

Hello ATBS1, have a search on google under cloches. There's lots of links to magazine articles on the subject and retailers selling different styles of cloches with illustrations of how to use them. Basically cloches all do the same thing - protect the pants. I think its just up to you to use what you have.

or English Heritage, that is if what you have is old enough.

Thanks for your replies but I'm still stuck on how to actually assemble the cloches. I have now bought some new glass and I think the book illustrations would indicate that I have frames for the Chase High Barn Cloche. Does anybody know how to assemble them or where I can find a book or manual to show how it's done?

There is a book for sale named Chase Cloche Gardening written by Chase at www.orangeberry.co.uk/obgardencat.htm it is £6. Is this the one you already have?

You have probaly sorted out how to assemble them by now! I do have several diagrams which show it for the barn cloches if not. Do you know what all your's are? Do you have some tall (2 foot) ones for example? Some of mine have 9 inch walls and I have no idea who made those or when as most of the barn cloches had 6 inch walls or 12 inch ones. I would be interested to know how you got on with them and if you followed the information in Chase's book
