Default Greenhouse/coldframe...daft question...

Could someone tell me how a cold frame differs from a greenhouse....apart from size, do they have different practical applications.

Ta.

Good one! Love to see the answer.

Coldframes are supposed to be sited on the north side of something so presumably don't get as warm as greenhouses, but other than that can't help - sorry.

I use my frame to start the hardening off process of things which have been in the greenhouse. It can be ventilated better than the greenhouse, still gives lots of light but also some protection from cold winds etc. I shut the lights at night. Toughens 'em up!

Mainly a size thing I would have thought which means that you can grow so much more in a greenhouse. I've mainly used cold frames for starting things off / hardening off before planting out but have been known to leave a cucumber in there for the season one year. In contrast the greenhouse is much more adaptable but obviously costs a lot more and takes up a lot more space etc
