    DIY Mini Greenhouse from Shelves

    Hi,

    I have a black metal set of shelves a bit like a tall bookcase, the shelves are also made of metal but have lots of uniform holes punched in them and also a wooden one like this IKEA | Heavy duty storage systems | GORM system | GORM | Shelving unit

    Here's the question ....

    Id if buy a 4 tier mini greenhouse cover do you think I could make a DIY mini Greenhouse if I made some poles/canes to fill out the rounded roof of the cover?

    Can you foresee any problems?

    The only problem I'd forsee is it being baggy and the wind howling up it. I'd also paint the wooden one with something like decking protection to make it waterproof.

    Just make sure the greenhouse cover is big enough.

    If I remember rightly, those bookcase are a little unstable, so make sure the lowest shelf has something heavy enough to counterbalance the wind so it doesn't blow over.

    Apart from that, they are basically the same item!

      I'm not sure how much a cover costs but I'd be tempted to use sheets of polycarbonate instead.

        The replacement covers are cheaper than polycarb I think Tamsin. Wilkos do them for about a fiver

          They have a four tier cover for £3.99 at the moment which was what got me thinking so essentially i just need to make sure i anchor it all properly?

            I have a couple of shelf units like this just outside my main greenhouse for hardening things off in. I use polythene and also swop and use fleece . I get polythene from a bed shop as the display mattresses come in large poly bags. I use tape and also washing pegs to hold the fleece etc on and they are weighted down with a large brick on the bottom shelf. I also remove one of the GH staging shelves at this time to allow me to plant up toms in the GH border. These shelves then hold a variety of pots with annuals in and make a nice display on the patio.
