  • Advice for big melons... any melons?

I've had a go at melons quite a few times now. I can't say that I've always had success.
In the greenhouse it seems that, whilst its often nice and hot, the melons don't like to romp-away under my guidance.
I like to give them as much support as I can - keep it quite moist (at least when I'm not working away - quite what happens when Mrs Balders is left in charge I wouldn't like to say).
I've got 3 good sized melon plants at the moment - they're constrained in 5 inch pots at the moment - 4 or 5 leaves on them and about 7 or 8 inches high.
What is the key to get big melons / any melons. How much attention do they need?

I've tried melons again this year. I will probably put them in the cold frame and see how I do by shutting the lid at night and propping half open during the day. Last year I did get a few melons but I was a bit lax with watering them so it all came to nothing in the end. Will try harder this year. Love to hear the answers to your questions too.

Dear Baldy, all melons need a lot of attention.

Can you share with us a picture of your problematic melons, we could perhaps suggest a routine that would 'bring them to life'

I'm guessing that we may get the pointy stick and may get told off for being more than a little childish!

I'll see if I can persuade Mrs Balders to 'put her wellies on' and take a 'polaroid' of my melons for your delectation. I'm not sure I quite understand the direction this thread is taking....

No doubt it will be a disappointment to you...
