Grow Your Own Magazine

Ok, am very excited as OH finishes work in 2 weeks for a new contracting job and instead of taking holiday he is taking the money for some extra days instead. And says I can have my greenhouse. Am sure he just wants to claim the house back from all the plants, lol, but who am I to argue!

So we are looking at polycarbonate as have 2 little ones and they are very clumsy with balls and toys etc.

But we are debating the size. I thoght 8x6 would be sufficient, he thinks 12x6 would be better. I hope to get a grape vine in there and overwinter my peach tree.

I also want to grow some stuff in the ground in it, that would'nt cope outside, or be early crops etc. Is this a good idea or is it best to have it all on a base and have grow bags and pots instead?

never had a greenhouse so totally unknown territory for me.

We were looking at this one - hope the link is attahced, any thoughts?

hi ,i would have the largest one that money will buy,subject to the size of ground available
i have tried grow bags, and are not for me,i much prefere the ground as it is a bigger area,you could try grow bags on the staging,in part of it,that will give you twice the growing area for the shorter plants,and use the other for things like toms and cue's,have fun and enjoy,lucky you,

you should ask nick the grief..........
he will tell you whatever size you choose
it still won't be big enough
go for glass if you can they do take quite a bit of batter
and the extra weight adds strength to your greenhouse
and they do safety glass for it

Janey - just a thought, if you dont want a new greenhouse, have you thought about ebay? Ive got a smashing one for £20! worth a look and you could spend the extra £ on plants etc. Bernie aka DDL

I have a 6x6. I could do with a 6x12:-)

I had a 12 by whatever one at my old house. I had a fan trained peach tree at the gable end, and a grape vine going the length of the eaves, with the fruiting shoots trained up over the inside of the roof. Great shading in the summer, and would help to 'hold it down' in the wind. We had loads of peaches, I was very sorry to have to leave it, especially as the new owners got rid of the greenhouse and cut the peach tree down. Definitely go for the biggest you can afford/fit in. I've had to downsize to 8 by 6, not big enough to house a tree and a vine

Janeyo, if you're buying a Norfolk, don't bother getting the Ultimate model unless it's going in a very, very sheltered spot - their Standard ones are much better at standing up to high winds etc. We have the Standard 12 on the allotment - you can see pics on my blog if you'd like to.

If you want a grape vine then get the 12x6 as it will eventually grow the full lengthl, also just think of all the great things you could grow in that extra 4 foot.
