  • What and when to do stuff!

    Good Afternoon

I'm relatively new to growing my own and really I don't have much of an idea as to when to plant seeds, when to plant out, when to harvest. Is there any literature anyone can recommend or do I just follow instructions on seed packets. So far, I've planted out quite a bit of veg, which is now sprouting and almost ready to plant out into pots, I think, but paranoia is almost upon me as I'm slowly realising that maybe now I've done the easy bit by getting things growing, but I really am unsure as to when to harvest. I don't want to be impatient and think, "oh, nothing is happening, so its a failure". Any information will be greatly appreciated.

    1) buy Hessayon's Vegetable Expert
    2) read the seed packets
    3) follow our What I Did Today thread

Thanks for the book rec. Would you say this is the best book to get?

It's a bit old fashioned, but it's thorough, and it's cheap (amazon).

If you have a look on the Recommendations forum, you'll find other favourites: there have been several threads on 'best books'

Thank you very much - will take a look at the threads. Have just ordered it too. Can you help me also on how to ensure I get a notification of threads when they are replied to? Thanks :-)

But do you get an email to say I have replied? If so how do you set that up?

Thanks you, you've been a great help. I don't feel so inadequate now.

I think that if you SUBCRIBE to a thread, then you can set up an email alert when there is a reply. Subscribe is in the Quick Links section at the top, next to the Search.
