  • what to do with old plastic greenhouse...

Having used plenty plastic greenhouses that have ripped or blown down I have completely had it with them. However today I discovered a new use for all the bits. I have used the poles and connectors to make myself various frames for fruit/brassica cages. With all the left over bits and pieces I've gathered I've made a frame for my broccoli, sprouts and strawberries that seems quite sturdy and just pushes into the ground. Obviously i've now got to find something to put over the frames...any suggestions what is best for strawbs(bearing in mind I will want them pollinated) and sprouts and broccoli (bearing in mind I'm completely freaked out by caterpillars so don't want to be seeing those on my food.)

What a good idea! Im just using the shelves as extra shelves in my greenhouse and as daytime cold frames outside.

PS What about putting that dratted netting around your frames?

Bought a one for a tenner to use inside my greenhouse with a small paraffin cold frame heater in the bottom giving localised heat. After I assembled it and pulled up the zip the stitching came away on the seam. Didn't really matter too much inside because I had the front rolled up most of the time. I now have it outside the greenhouse, pegged down with two large pegs and a lump of heavy pipe threaded through the bottom of the door flap to keep it down. Quite useful for hardening off my trays of bedding plants!

Netting would keep off both birds and the dreaded cabbage white butterfly. As long as you can hold it down it should be fine. Be careful to check it for birds. We once had to climb into next door's garden when they were away because a bird was getting hysterical after being trapped in their fruit cage. I don't mind using slug pellets where I've netted. Birds can't get it.
