I also read that soaking them over night in paraffin also keeps mice at bay...Lauren

No idea about the moth balls, but I know they keep squirrels off bird food!- so it's worth a try with mice.

I had heard warnings about moth balls, so I googled it, and found this:
        http://www.kendall-bioresearch.co.uk/domestmoth.htm
"WARNING. Traditional Moth Balls (even if available) should not be used. These contain either Naphthalene or Paradichlorobenzene. Both chemicals are potentially very toxic. They vaporize to produce fumes which may have toxic effects on humans and pet animals. "

I wouldn't want to use the moth balls. They would just find their way into the food chain.

I wouldn't really want to use parrafin either. Which doesn't help! Mouse traps?

I had a friend who worked at the Natural History Museum spending the whole of his life looking at moths balls under a microscope to determine the different micromoths od SE Asia - well someone's got to do it.

                  Yes moths do have balls.

Best way I've found for peas and beans is to germinate in the greenhouse, either in trays, cells or guttering. That way at least you know they're alive when you plant them out. I don't like using chemicals of any sort if I don't have to.
